The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has implemented a new rule that will apply equally to all schools affiliated with the CBSE. The board has mandated that all schools appoint career counselors. This decision was taken to reduce the academic pressure on students.
CBSE Shares Details
According to the information shared by the board, "All CBSE schools will be required to appoint one regular counseling and wellness teacher or social-emotional counselor for every 500 students. Additionally, it has been made mandatory to have a career counselor for students in classes 9 to 12."
The CBSE took this decision after a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Rajasthan High Court in July 2025. The petition raised concerns about the increasing academic pressure on students, mental stress, and the lack of career guidance, prompting the court to seek a response from the board. Following this, the board formulated this rule to ensure the mental well-being of students.
Previous Rule
Before this rule came into effect, CBSE schools were only required to appoint a full-time psychological counselor if they had more than 300 students in classes 9 to 12, while smaller schools were allowed to have part-time counselors.
Qualifications for Career Counselors
Career counselors and wellness teachers will be required to have a degree in psychology or social work and 50 hours of training recognized by the CBSE. These counselors will provide counseling to students and parents, identify mental health issues, and attempt to resolve any problems.
