Heavy snowfall paralyzed transportation around New Chitose Airport in Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido on Jan. 25, leaving about 7,000 passengers stranded overnight as flights, trains, and expressways were disrupted.
Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways said some flights to and from the airport were canceled, though limited services continued operating, Japanese newspaper The Mainichi reported.
More than 90 flights were canceled at the airport on Monday due to severe snow conditions, forcing airport authorities to open parts of the terminal overnight to accommodate stranded travelers, Japan Today reported.
Over 2,000 people were forced to stay at New Chitose Airport from Monday night to Tuesday.
While general roads remained open, social media posts from stranded travelers described chaotic scenes inside the airport.
Users on X called the situation “disaster level,” citing overcrowding and taxi lines stretching to more than 200 people.
One post read, “It’s packed with people who can’t get out.”
Hokkaido has been hit by persistent heavy snowfall in recent days.
Up to 65 cm of snow fell in Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, in the 48 hours through 10 p.m. Monday, the highest level recorded since statistics began in 1999, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
