A period drama series from the BBC boasting "swashbuckling" action has landed on BBC iPlayer. The Musketeers aired for three seasons on the BBC between 2014 and 2016, delivering 10 episodes each, providing audiences with abundant drama through a contemporary reimagining of Alexandre Dumas's timeless novel, situated in 17th-century Paris.

The programme chronicles the elite bodyguards Athos, Aramis, Porthos, and d'Artagnan as they safeguard King Louis XIII and Parisian citizens from numerous dangers, including dishonest officials and international adversaries. Starring Tom Burke as Athos, Santiago Cabrera as Aramis, Howard Charles as Porthos, and Luke Pasqualino as d'Artagnan, all serving under Hugo Speer's Captain Treville.

The programme also showcased prominent actors as the principal "villains" throughout its run, including Peter Capaldi as Cardinal Richelieu in series one, Marc Warren as the Comte de Rochefort in series two and Rupert Everett as the Marquis de Feron in series three.

Developed by Adrian Hodges, the programme proved enormously successful upon its initial broadcast and received considerable acclaim for its reimagining of the Alexandre Dumas masterpiece with a contemporary, grittier atmosphere, shot mainly in the Czech Republic.

The Rotten Tomatoes reviews give all three series favourable ratings, with one viewer commenting: "Season one is a fresh take on Dumas's original book theme of how the Musketeers were there to thwart the evil Cardinal and his plans for taking over France.

"Great chemistry by the actors and actresses help give the season depth and lay the foundation for season two, which you'll want to watch."

Another viewer commented: "Honestly, one of my favorites seasons of TV ever. This is so much fun and so well done. I absolutely love it. I highly recommend checking this show out! The casting for this show is so good. I love, love, love the Cardinal especially!" A third remarked: "Absolute perfect. This series is a little pearl."

Another contributed: "This is a bunch of straightforward good guys vs bad guys plot lines. Protecting King and Queen, dealing with villains with lots women to be saved, sword play and shooting of muskets and pistols.

"Protecting the innocent. Nothing ground-breaking here, although based on the characters and not the plot of Dumas' novel. I doubt any historical accuracy, but Louis XIII, Queen Anne, the musketeers and Cardinal Richelieu were real people; stylish production and great looking cast make this entirely agreeable."

A fifth added: "A fun and enjoyable retelling of the classic story. I really enjoyed this show and am actually giving it a second watch. The only thing that bothered/bothers me is the British accents where there's supposed to be French or Spanish, etc. It makes it less believable, but the stories are still great and the actors are fabulous."
