Most people connect to free WiFi without thinking twice when they see it available at malls, railway stations, airports, hotels, or cafes. But this small act of haste can become a major threat to your digital life. According to cyber experts, public WiFi networks are the easiest targets for hackers.

Hackers often create fake or unsecured WiFi networks with names that look exactly like legitimate ones. As soon as you connect, your online activity comes under their control. Passwords, OTPs, email logins, social media accounts, and even banking details can be easily stolen.

The risk increases manifold if you use mobile banking, UPI payments, online shopping, email, or social media logins while connected to free WiFi.

Once your information is leaked, the hacker can silently withdraw money from your account without you even realizing it.

In some cases, hackers don't just steal data; they also send malware to gain remote control of your phone. They can then turn on your camera, access your microphone, track your location – essentially turning your phone into a tool for spying on you.

If you absolutely must use free WiFi, always use secure websites (https). Avoid online banking and payments completely. Keep the auto-connect WiFi option turned off. Using a VPN is much safer. Disconnect from the WiFi as soon as you're finished.
