Water Test: Put some mustard oil in a glass. Now add equal amount of water in it. If oil and water remain in clearly separate layers, then the oil is pure. But if the oil becomes milky or both start mixing, then the oil may be adulterated.
Fridge Test: Keep the mustard oil in the refrigerator for a few hours. Pure mustard oil starts freezing slightly in cold. If the oil does not solidify at all, it may be adulterated with refined or other cheap oil.
Cotton Test: Put some oil on cotton swab. If the oil spreads too quickly and leaves a light color, it may be adulterated. Pure mustard oil spreads slowly and has a dark colour.
Identification by smell and taste: The aroma of pure mustard oil is strong and pungent. If the aroma of the oil is very light or not there at all, then one should be suspicious. Pure mustard oil also tastes a bit spicy.
Hydrochloric Acid Test (Chemical Test): This test is done with the help of a lab or an expert. This reveals dangerous adulteration like argemone oil. Argemone oil can cause serious diseases like dropsy.
