According to the data, gross tax collection from domestic transactions increased by 4.8 per cent to Rs 1.41 lakh crore in January, while import revenue increased by 10.1 per cent to Rs 52,253 crore. Meanwhile, cess collection from tobacco products stood at Rs 5,768 crore in January. It stood at Rs 13,009 crore in January 2025, when cess was levied on luxury, harmful and injurious goods like cars and tobacco products.

It is noteworthy that the Central Government had reduced the GST rates on about 375 items from September 22, 2025, due to which the goods became cheaper. Also, instead of cess being levied on luxury, harmful and injurious goods as before, compensation cess is now levied only on tobacco and products. The reduction in GST rates has affected revenue collection.
