The decision was communicated through an official statement issued by the Government of Pakistan, which granted approval for the national team to take part in the global event but categorically stated that the side “shall not take the field” for the February 15 fixture against India, scheduled to be played in Colombo. The tournament is being co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka and begins on February 7.

While the government statement did not spell out the reasons behind the boycott, the move is widely viewed as a political protest linked to the International Cricket Council’s recent decision to remove Bangladesh from the tournament. Bangladesh had sought to have all its matches shifted from India to Sri Lanka, citing security concerns, but the ICC rejected the request and replaced them with Scotland. Pakistan, the only country to publicly back Bangladesh’s position, had accused the ICC of applying double standards and favouring India.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had earlier said it would reassess its participation following Bangladesh’s exclusion, with chairman Mohsin Naqvi indicating that the final call would rest with the government. After meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and days of internal deliberations, Islamabad appears to have settled on a middle path — avoiding a complete withdrawal from the tournament while singling out the India fixture for a boycott.

“The Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan grants approval to the Pakistan Cricket Team to participate in the ICC World T20 2026, however, the Pakistan Cricket Team shall not take the field in the match scheduled on 15th February 2026 against India,” the statement posted on the government’s official social media handle read.

The announcement effectively ensures that the T20 World Cup will become the first men’s ICC event since 2010 not to feature an India–Pakistan contest in the group stages. The two sides have not played a bilateral series in over a decade due to strained diplomatic relations, but the ICC has consistently placed them in the same group at global tournaments since 2012, largely due to the fixture’s unmatched commercial value and global viewership.

The boycott of the February 15 match is expected to have significant implications. A forfeiture would hand India two points via a walkover, while Pakistan would lose points and suffer a hit to their net run rate. Under ICC Playing Conditions, the defaulting team’s net run rate is adversely affected by counting a full 20-over innings against them, while the non-defaulting team’s net run rate remains unchanged. The ICC also retains the authority to impose financial penalties on the PCB for failing to fulfil a scheduled fixture.
