On Tuesday evening, a collision occurred between the wingtips of two Airbus A320 aircraft belonging to Air India and IndiGo at Mumbai Airport. Fortunately, all passengers on board were unharmed.
The incident took place as Air India's aircraft was positioned on the taxiway awaiting takeoff, while the IndiGo plane was taxiing after landing. Both aircraft were grounded for inspection following the incident.
A team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has arrived at the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the civil aviation ministry.
The exact number of passengers involved has not been disclosed yet.
According to an Air India representative, flight AI2732, which was scheduled to fly from Mumbai to Coimbatore, experienced a delay due to the contact with the IndiGo aircraft while on the taxiway.
"The wingtips of both planes touched, causing damage to our aircraft's wingtip. As a precaution, it has been grounded for further technical checks. All passengers were safely disembarked," the spokesperson stated.
An IndiGo spokesperson also provided a statement, indicating that their flight 6E791 from Hyderabad to Mumbai had its wingtip come into contact with another airline's aircraft during taxiing after landing.
"All passengers are safe and were disembarked after the aircraft was parked. The plane is currently undergoing maintenance inspections. Relevant authorities have been notified, and an investigation is underway," the IndiGo spokesperson added.
The incident occurred around 7:30 PM at one of India's busiest airports. The civil aviation ministry spokesperson elaborated that while AI2732 was taxiing from C1 towards M4 for departure, the IndiGo flight was taxiing to join B1 when the wingtips made contact.
Both aircraft were taxiing at the time, and they subsequently returned to their bays for thorough inspections.
