Pat Cummins being ruled out from the 2026 ICC T20 Men's World Cup is already a big blow for Australia. But should Sunrisers Hyderabad be prepping for the same in the 2026 Indian Premier League? Pat Cummins provided the update. Recently, the premium fast bowler attended the report in Sydney, where he said that he has to wait for a scan for further developments.
He is currently leading the Sunrisers Hyderabad team and even took them to the finals in 2024. Speaking to the reporters, he sounded hopeful for his participation but added that his reports will make the final call. He said,
“We’ll just be guided by my back. We’ll have another scan in a few weeks, and if it’s good, then we’ll have a slow build-up. T20s are a little bit easier to get up for, that’s why I was so close to getting up for this World Cup."
Pat Cummins on missing the World Cup
Pat Cummins informed that he was wishing for a recovery from his back issues for the World Cup; a "minor setback" delayed the process. He said,
"It was really unfortunate. I feel pretty good, just a minor setback, and I just ran out of time, really. I’ll rest up for a few weeks and go from there."
He added,
“We knew after the (Adelaide) Test match we were going to need somewhere between four and eight weeks to let the bone settle right down before then building back up. Initially, we thought it might only be four weeks, because I was feeling really good, but I just had a follow-up scan. They thought it probably needs another couple of weeks, so the timeline just became a bit too tight."

Pat Cummins' injury history
Pat Cummins has been officially ruled out of Australia’s squad for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup due to a recurring lumbar bone stress injury. Although the fast bowler was initially included in the provisional squad, a follow-up scan conducted in late January revealed that the injury required additional healing time, ruling him out of the tournament starting on February 7, 2026.
The back issue has persisted since Australia’s tour of the West Indies in July 2025 and limited Cummins to just one Test during the Ashes series in December. Medical assessments indicated an extended recovery window of around eight weeks, prompting Cummins to opt for a cautious approach in view of a packed Test calendar later in the year, including series against Bangladesh, South Africa and New Zealand.
Left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis has been named as his replacement. Notably, the 2023 ODI world Cup winning captain Cummins last featured in a T20I in June 2024 that too against India.
