On Wednesday, Yumnam Khemchand Singh officially took the oath of office as the Chief Minister of Manipur. The ceremony was conducted by Governor Ajay Bhalla at the Lok Bhavan. Just a day prior, Singh was elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party in New Delhi. The meeting saw the presence of 35 out of 37 BJP legislators, along with central observers Tarun Chugh, Northeast in-charge Sambit Patra, and state party president A. Sharda Devi.
After assuming office, Singh expressed his belief that Manipur will play a crucial role in the vision of a developed India by 2047. He highlighted the diversity of the state, which is home to 36 communities, and expressed hopes for restoring peace in the region. Alongside him, BJP MLA Nemcha Kipgen from the Kuki community was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister, taking her oath virtually. Additionally, L. Dikho from the Naga People's Front also took the oath as Deputy Chief Minister.
Beyond his political career, Khemchand Singh has a long-standing association with taekwondo. A black belt holder, he previously served as the vice president of the Taekwondo Federation of India and has been actively involved in promoting the sport in the Northeast. Although he has been engaged in politics for decades, the 62-year-old made his assembly debut in 2017, representing the Singjamei constituency in Imphal West. He was later elected as the Speaker of the Manipur Assembly during the first BJP government led by N. Biren Singh.
In 2022, Khemchand Singh took on the role of cabinet minister in Biren Singh's second government. During his tenure, he managed several key departments, including Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD), Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, as well as Education.
