However, there may come a time when you decide to step away from content creation. Whether you want a break from social media, a fresh start, or complete removal of your online presence, YouTube offers two options: temporarily hiding your channel or permanently deleting it.
This guide explains the difference between both options and provides a clear, step-by-step method to help you take the right action.
If you’re unsure about permanently leaving YouTube, hiding your channel is a safer option. This allows you to:
Make your channel invisible to the public
Hide your videos, playlists, likes, and subscriptions
Remove your channel from search results
Restore everything later if you decide to return
This option is ideal if you want a temporary break without losing your content.
Deleting your channel is irreversible. Once removed:
All videos, playlists, comments, messages, and history are deleted
Subscribers and channel data cannot be recovered
The channel cannot be restored in the future
Important Note: YouTube channels cannot be deleted through smartphones — this must be done using a desktop browser.
Open YouTube Studio in a web browser
Sign in using your Google account
Click Settings in the left-side menu
Go to the Channel tab
Select Advanced Settings
Scroll down and click Remove YouTube Content
Choose I want to hide my content
Select the content you want to hide
Click Hide My Channel to confirm
Your channel will now be hidden, but you can restore it anytime.
Visit YouTube Studio on a desktop browser
Sign in to your Google account
Click on Settings
Open Channel → Advanced Settings
Scroll down and select Remove YouTube Content
Choose I want to permanently delete my content
Confirm by checking all required boxes
Click Delete My Content
Once completed, your channel and all associated data will be permanently removed.
Back up important videos and data
Inform subscribers if needed
Consider hiding instead of deleting if unsure
Remember: Permanent deletion cannot be undone
