*Warning - spoilers ahead for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 4.*
Daeron Targaryen's prophetic dream in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 4 contains numerous hints regarding Ser Duncan The Tall's destiny.
Sky and HBO provided viewers with an early premiere of the Game of Thrones spin-off this week, as scheduling changes prompted by the Superbowl resulted in episode 4 arriving this morning at 8:01 GMT.
Episode 4 sees Ser Dunk (Peter Claffey) find himself in a precarious situation following his assault on Aerion Targaryen (Finn Bennett) whilst defending Tanselle Too-Tall (Tanzyn Crawford).
The preceding episode also revealed that Dunk's young squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) is in fact Aegon Targaryen. Egg preserves Dunk's life by disclosing his genuine identity, and we witness him in a prison cell at the start of episode 4.
Following his reunion with Egg, who expresses remorse for misleading him, Dunk discovers he faces the probable loss of a hand or foot should he stand trial for assaulting Prince Aerion. Nevertheless, an alternative exists - trial by combat - which Aerion endeavours to decline, knowing defeat appears inevitable.
Aerion learns he may only refuse by abandoning his accusation against Dunk, prompting him instead to demand a Trial of the Seven, an archaic form of trial by combat featuring two groups of seven combatants battling to summon the gods and "see the guilty party punished".
Dunk must then tackle the daunting task of recruiting six knights to stand beside him in combat, or face being declared guilty, reports the Mirror.
Meanwhile in the episode, viewers learn that the intoxicated individual Dunk met at the inn during the season opener was none other than Egg's elder brother, Daeron Targaryen (Henry Ashton).
During a pivotal moment, Daeron and Dunk step outside the tent, where the prince expresses remorse to the knight for dragging him into this predicament and confesses he has glimpsed what lies ahead. This follows Daeron's warning to the knight to "stay away" from him during their initial tavern meeting in episode 1.
As it transpires, despite being a drunkard and largely incompetent by most measures, Daeron has inherited the Targaryen ability of clairvoyance.
House of the Dragon viewers might recall that Daeron's forebear Helaena Targaryen possessed the same capability, with her enigmatic remarks frequently foreshadowing future events.
Revealing his vision to Dunk in episode 4, Daeron tells him: "I dreamed of you."
"You said that, at the inn," Dunk curtly responds, as Daeron proceeds to clarify: "My dreams are not like yours; mine come true; an impressive talent for an unimpressive man.
"Another one of life's little ironies," he adds, before disclosing Dunk's destiny as a possible dragon slayer. "I have seen your sir, and a fire, and a dead dragon," he declares.
"A great beast with wings so large they could cover this meadow. It had fallen on top of you but you were alive and the dragon was dead."
"Did I kill it?" Dunk enquires, as Daeron confirms: "That I could not say. We were dragon masters, once. Hard to believe. Now they are all gone but we remain."
*Warning - some book spoilers ahead*
Similar to House of the Dragon, Targaryen prophecies cannot be trusted to be clear-cut, with unexpected turns frequently occurring.
During the House of the Dragon era, approximately 75 years prior to the events of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the Targaryens were all dragonriders.
Yet dragons have subsequently vanished from existence, rendering the Royal family considerably weaker and increasingly descending into insanity due to generations of inbreeding.
Whilst the precise manner in which Daeron's prophecy unfolds within the broader Game of Thrones television universe remains uncertain, the novels provide far greater clarity.
In George. R.R. Martin's books, both Ser Duncan and Aegon are present during the catastrophe at Summerhall, a devastating inferno that represented one of the bleakest moments in Targaryen history.
Although numerous aspects of the catastrophe stay ambiguous, it serves as a pivotal element in both characters' narratives.
Hence, it's probable that Daeron's prophecy is enigmatically sketching out the fate of Dunk and Egg in the distant future - but we shan't reveal any more!
