Mamata Banerjee on SIR : West Bengal : Assembly elections will be held in West Bengal soon. But before that, the SIR process has been started and a big controversy has arisen out of it. On the SIR process, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee (Mamata Banerjee) has knocked the door of the Supreme Court. Due to this, movements have also started in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The West Bengal Legislative Assembly has claimed that 107 people have lost their lives due to fear and anxiety caused by Special Intensive Reforms (SIR) in the state. Everyone has expressed surprise due to this claim of the state government.
In West Bengal, the SIR process is underway to revise the electoral roll ahead of the assembly elections. The ruling Trinamool Congress has alleged that the process has created widespread fear among the general public. This is a form of NRC, which has created fear among citizens that names will be removed from the electoral roll and their citizenship will be questioned.
According to a resolution tabled in the Assembly, 107 people have died so far due to fear of exclusion from the voter list or mental anguish due to lack of documents. The state government of West Bengal has claimed that many of these have committed suicide. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party have alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the central government are using the process to intimidate the people of Bengal and deprive them of their democratic rights. The resolution also questioned the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI). Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has demanded that the commission and the central government take responsibility for these deaths. The politics of West Bengal heated up over this issue. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that 3-4 people were committing suicide every day in the state “due to fear of the government”.
BJP’s counterattack
Opposition party BJP has clearly rejected these allegations of Chief Minister Mamata. BJP leaders say that the Trinamool Congress government is deliberately spreading rumors and fear among the people to gain electoral advantage. He describes these deaths as the politics of personal tragedies. But now this matter has reached the Supreme Court. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Election Commission in this case and has questioned the fairness of the SIR process.
Just yesterday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee requested the Supreme Court to intervene in the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral roll “to protect democracy”. He alleged that the state was being targeted and the rights of its people were being violated. On Wednesday, Mamata Banerjee became the first sitting Chief Minister to argue in the Supreme Court.
