Going on holiday abroad is an admin-filled affair that requires a lot of organisation, from sorting travel insurance and money to gathering passports, boarding passes, and of course, the dreaded task of packing. Packing for a trip can prove to be pretty stressful and to add to the woes, there's the issue of making sure your bags meet the right size and weight requirements to avoid landing a fine at the airport.

While all airlines follow the same rules on what passengers are strictly banned from takingon board, there can be differences when it comes to luggage sizes and what you're allowed to take into the cabin with you free of charge. Some airlines will allow passengers to take more than one carry-on bag, while others may require you to check bags into the hold if they don't meet the correct size requirements.

If you're going on holiday for a week then it's likely you'll be taking a large suitcase with you which will be checked in at the airport desk on arrival, but packing a carry-on bag can be a bit more tricky as hand luggage rules can vary from airline to airline, so it's worth checking before you fly so you don't get stung by any additional fees.

So if you're travelling abroad with TUI, easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 or British Airways this year, these are the hand luggage rules for flights that you need to know.

TUI

TUI's luggage policy says passengers can take one piece of hand luggage per person - excluding infants. This bag can be up to 10kg and must be no larger than 55 x 40 x 20cm and must be stored in the seat in front of you.

Passengers can also take one small personal item, such as a backpack, laptop bag or a handbag, onboard, with maximum dimensions of 40 x 30 x 20cm. The same hand luggage rules apply if you've just booked a flight only, rather than a package holiday.

easyJet

All easyJet passengers can bring one small cabin bag onboard, such as a backpack, that will fit under the seat for free. This bag can be a maximum size of 45 x 36 x 20cm and no heavier than 15kg.

Passengers also have the option of bringing a larger cabin bag onboard, with a maximum size of 56 x 45 x 25cm, but this must be added to your booking for an extra fee. easyJet Plus members, or customers who have booked an Inclusive Plus fare, can bring a large cabin bag - in addition to the small bag - as part of their membership or fare benefits.

Ryanair

All Ryanair passenger fare types include a small personal bag that can be carried onboard, but it must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

A small carry-on bag can be a backpack, handbag or laptop bag, with a maximum size of 40 x 30 x 20cm. All bags that are larger than these dimensions face an extra charge.

Passengers can take a small cabin bag onboard with a maximum size of 55 x 40 x 20cm, and maximum weight of 10kg, and this must be stored in the overhead locker on the plane. To take an extra cabin bag with you (in addition to your small carry-on), costs between £9.49 and £44.99 at the time of booking, or between £2.99 and £44.99 post-booking or at the airport.

Jet2

Jet2 passengers can bring one small under-seat bag onboard, such as a handbag, laptop bag or airport purchase, providing it doesn't exceed 40cm x 30cm x 200cm in size and can be placed underneath the seat in front.

Passengers can also take one piece of hand luggage onboard free of charge providing it weighs no more than 10kg and is no larger than 56 x 45 x 25cm, including wheels and handles.

British Airways

Passengers on British Airways, BA Cityflyer and BA Euroflyer can carry a handbag onboard flights providing it is no larger than 40 x 30 x 15cm and can fit under the seat in front. This bag may contain essentials like medication, mobile phones, other electronic devices and passports, and is guaranteed in the cabin.

Passengers can also take a cabin bag onboard with a maximum dimension of 56 x 45 x 25cm, including wheels and handles. You must be able to lift this bag into the overhead comparment unassisted and it shouldn't contain valuables, elecronics or essential medicines.
