New Delhi: A new twist has emerged in the ongoing controversy regarding the T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has now demanded formal talks with the International Cricket Council (ICC). In fact, the PCB had earlier written a letter to the ICC about withdrawing from the match against India and terming it a case of extraordinary circumstances, it had also linked its government’s tweet as the basis.

In response to this, ICC asked PCB what circumstances it was citing under extraordinary circumstances. ICC also made it clear that withdrawing from the match could lead to legal consequences and possible sanctions. Now in the latest development, PCB has taken the initiative to adopt the path of dialogue with ICC to resolve this entire issue, so that the dispute arising regarding India-Pakistan match can be resolved.

Citing the instructions of its government, the Pakistan Cricket Board had said not to take the field for the group match against India on February 15 (Sunday) and kept it under ‘extraordinary circumstances’. In response, the ICC, as per the rules, asked the PCB under what circumstances it took this decision and what steps it took to mitigate these circumstances.

Solution will be found through dialogue
According to sources, the ICC made its stand clear in the entire matter and reiterated the priority of impartiality, sanctity of rules and communication. The ICC’s objective is to maintain the dignity of global tournaments, protect the interests of players and fans and ensure transparency in all decisions. While handling the disputes to Bangladesh and Pakistan, ICC chose the path of dialogue instead of confrontation. The ICC clarified that the rules, precedents and integrity of the tournament will be given top priority when taking decisions with any member country. ICC in its official statement also raised questions on Pakistan’s decision of selective participation and said that it is not in accordance with the spirit of the global sporting event.

In its detailed response, the ICC also explained the conditions under which a board can claim extraordinary circumstances, what kind of evidence is required for this and what could be the sporting, commercial and administrative consequences of withdrawing from the match. ICC also warned of possible financial losses and legal claims.

According to sources, ICC also made it clear as per its official policy that it is ready for talks to resolve any dispute, but the rules and contracts will not be compromised. The ICC said that the interest of the game is above any unilateral decision and it is also necessary to prevent a wrong example from being set in the future.

After receiving the formal response from ICC, PCB has now taken the initiative to start further talks with the international body. At present, structured dialogue is going on between ICC and PCB, so that a solution to this dispute can be found. This stance of ICC is not new. Earlier, even in sensitive matters to Bangladesh and other member boards, it had given priority to dialogue, stability and protection of rules while avoiding haste or confrontation. ICC has made it clear that its objective is to protect the interests of cricket, players and fans.
