US President Donald Trump's wife Melania Trump has been exchanging letters with King Charles for many years, it has been reported. In her memoir, titled Melania, she reveals that she had an "ongoing correspondence with King Charles III", with the pair having first met in 2005.

The pair reportedly rekindled their unlikely friendship during Donald Trump's UK visit in 2019. As previously reported by People, the First Lady wrote last year: "As we bid farewell to Her Majesty, we extended a cordial invitation for her return visit to the United States.

"She expressed her gratitude with a warm smile. Sadly, Her Majesty wasn't able to visit with us again before her death in 2022, but our friendship with the Royal Family continues, and we exchange letters with King Charles to this day."

Although the visit is yet to be confirmed, King Charles could be due travel to the US with Queen Camilla this spring.

It has previously reported that the long-haul trip would take place to revitalise a key trade deal which had been put on "pause" by President Donald Trump.

But following Trump's recent tariff threats over Greenland,Sir Keir Starmer is coming under growing pressure to call off the King's state visit to the US, as it's the Government that decides where members of the Royal Family travel to, not the Palace.

All abroad trips are conducted on the advice of the Foreign Office.

Conservative backbencher Simon Hoare has described Trump as a "gangster pirate" and called for the King's visit to be cancelled.

He said: "The civilised world can deal with Trump no longer. He is a gangster pirate."

The comment came as the US president has alarmed NATO partners, saying that countries opposing an American takeover of the Danish territory could face sweeping trade penalties within weeks.
