Theatrical Anticipation at Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2026

The Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2026, one of the largest international theatre festivals globally, kicked off in Chandigarh on Monday, filling the Tagore Theatre with excitement. Various theatre groups were busy preparing, with a courtroom set being constructed at the center of the stage and sound checks resonating throughout the venue. Every corner was occupied by performers rehearsing and adjusting to their surroundings. The afternoon was alive with activity, from director Abhishek Sharma managing the setup to a mali arguing with security over a misplaced plant.

A Veteran's Perspective

Amidst the hustle, we noticed the esteemed theatre director, set designer, and actor Avtar Sahni observing a technical rehearsal by the Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts, who were getting ready for the festival's inaugural play, Khamosh! Adaalat Jaari Hai.

With over fifty years of experience, Sahni expressed feeling nervous. “That’s the charm of theatre,” he remarked. “Each performance is unique. Factors like an actor’s health and the audience's reactions ensure that every show is a fresh experience.”

Exploring Gender Dynamics in Theatre

Vijay Tendulkar’s Khamosh! Adaalat Jaari Hai has been performed numerous times. When asked why he chose this play, Sahni explained, “In the 1960s, women were in a significantly subordinate role in society. Even in 2026, despite discussions around women’s rights, I believe little has changed since the ’60s or ’70s.” He questioned the gender divide, stating, “The only difference is biological. Emotions, intellect, and abilities are fundamentally the same. This unequal treatment has always seemed unjust to me. Therefore, I have presented Leela Benare’s struggle against the system without altering a single line.”

A Humble Beginning

Sahni’s extensive journey in theatre began modestly when he played a monkey in a Ramleela performance in Shimla. Inspired by Anupam Kher’s comedic performances, he started from the ground up, initially as a background actor before progressing to monologues on stage.

During his college years in Ambala, he learned about the National School of Drama. The prospect of receiving formal training and earning a living through theatre, which was not widely recognized at the time, intrigued him. He successfully passed the NSD entrance exam and earned a scholarship.

Balancing Passion and Profession

Reflecting on his early career, Sahni recalled his mother’s worries about whether theatre could sustain him financially. “I managed,” he stated modestly. Although he has appeared in films like Dil Se, Sarfarosh, Omkara, Highway, and The Accidental Prime Minister, earning significant fees, his true passion lies in theatre. “Films feel stale,” he remarked, “nothing compares to the enchantment of live performances. When you pursue your passion, honesty is essential.” With that, he returned to his troupe.

International Flavor at the Festival

On the second day of Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2026, Chandigarh will host a performance from Mauritius titled Samay Chakra, presented by Vacoas Rang Bhoomi Kala Mandir.

Directed by Rajeshwar Seetohul, this play tackles urgent environmental issues, with Seetohul himself taking on the role of Samay.
