A 70-year-old woman lost her life and six others were injured in a tragic incident like stampede during Kalash Yatra at Navagraha temple in Dabra town of Gwalior district.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when thousands of devotees, especially women, gathered near Dabra Stadium for a religious procession to mark the inauguration of the temple. There was chaos during the distribution of the sacred urns, people started running and jostling to take them, which led to a fierce scuffle and the crowd increased.
Gwalior Collector Ruchika Chauhan said that the 70-year-old woman died of suffocation after being crushed in the scuffle. The injured included six women (45-55 years old) and a 4-year-old girl who was with her mother. Four women were treated at a local hospital in Dabra and their condition is stable, while three more women (including the child) have been referred to a facility in Gwalior for advanced care.
Collector Chauhan said that complete arrangements had been made since morning, but due to huge crowd during distribution of urns, this accident happened. Eyewitnesses said that the situation broke down due to pushing and shoving. After this accident, the Kalash Yatra proceeded peacefully on the fixed route till Navagraha temple under surveillance.
To ensure that this does not happen again during this event lasting several days, the authorities will manage the crowd more strictly. As soon as the venue gets filled with people, entry will be stopped and movement will be planned gradually.
This incident shows the dangers of holding large religious events despite preparations. There is no news of any other casualties, and the situation is still under control.
