Rajkumar Hirani on sequels to Munna Bhai and 3 Idiots

In conversation with Variety India, Rajkumar got talking about sequels to 3 Idiots and Munna Bhai. He said, “I have a couple of ideas at the moment. I’m actually working on both the films. I’ve been working on a ‘Munna Bhai’ script and also on a ‘3 Idiots’ sequel idea. For ‘Munna Bhai’ I had an idea, which is done to a larger level, but still, I haven’t found the right end for it."

The director further went on to add, “For ‘3 Idiots’ (sequel), it was just very recently that suddenly, out of nowhere, this one idea sparked up. And I have no idea how it’s gone out in the universe. Because it’s still not there, but we said we’ll work on it. And then, as and when it happens… but somehow one morning, I saw that the news is out there. I have three or four scripts with me at the moment, and I’ll have to pretty quickly take a call on which way to walk now."

The Munna Bhai series, features Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi in the lead roles and has been a cult film ever since Munna Bhai M.B.B.S first released back in 2003. The 2006 film, Lage Raho Munna Bhai was equally a hit and ever since, fans have been hoping to get a third instalment, and with Hirani’s latest comment, it looks like it might just be happening.

Similarly, for 3 Idiots (2009), which features Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, continues to be a fan favourite, especially due to the way people relate to it. A news on the sequel has been one of the most awaited events, and it looks like that’s happening.

Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor and Rajkumar Hirani, who’ve worked together for the hit film that Sanju was, were all set to collaborate for a biopic next. However, it looks like that movie has been delayed and is now likely to go on floors in 2027. However, there’s no confirmation on the same.

As per Mid-Day, “Hirani and Ranbir were very excited about this one; they had been jamming on it through the year. Hirani decided to park it. Ranbir’s calendar is packed, so it made sense to regroup later. Everyone wants it to be like Sanju, so they’re okay to wait."
