YouTube Music has begun implementing a major change on its platform. Lyrics will no longer be available for free for many users. The company has begun locking the lyrics feature behind a Premium subscription, limiting the experience for free users.

According to reports, this change has been in testing for the past few months but is now being implemented on accounts worldwide. Once this change is applied to a user's account, a new card appears above the Lyrics tab on the Now Playing screen, indicating the user's remaining chances to view free lyrics.

Google allows free users to view lyrics only five times. After these five views, the option to view the full lyrics is disabled. After this, users are only able to see the first few lines of the song, while the rest is blurred and cannot be scrolled.

To view the full lyrics, users must have a YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium subscription. In the US, YouTube Music Premium costs $10.99 per month, offering ad-free music, background playback, offline downloads, and AI features. YouTube Premium costs $13.99 per month, offering ad-free video viewing on the main YouTube app.

How Many Paid Subscriptions Are There?
This change comes as Google recently announced that it has over 325 million paid subscriptions. By 2025, YouTube had generated over $60 billion in revenue from ads and subscriptions.
This move indicates that YouTube is moving more features to a paid model, gradually limiting the experience for free users.
