BJP MP from Odisha Sujit Kumar said the defense budget has been increased to Rs 7.85 lakh crore, which is about 16 percent more than last year. The defense budget in 2013-14 was around Rs 2.55 lakh crore, which has now more than tripled. Sujit Kumar said that it is not possible to imagine a developed India without a safe India.

While discussing the budget in the Rajya Sabha, he said that India’s defense exports were only Rs 686 crore in 2013-14, which has now increased to about Rs 24,000 crore. The target is to take it to Rs 50,000 crore in the coming two-three years. This is a big achievement in the direction of self-reliant India. The government has given a clear message that the nation stands with its Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard.

Kumar said that this first budget of the second phase of the 21st century is not just an annual financial document, but a vision roadmap of India’s development journey for the next 25 years. It was described as a purposeful budget, a budget based on philosophy and a budget dedicated to ‘duty’.

The first duty is to empower the aspirations of the people. Second, to accelerate economic development and the third duty is to ensure ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’. He said that this is a politics of duty, not of debt or of mere work. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is emphasizing on duty-based nation building.

Referring to Chanakya’s Arthashastra, he said, “Praja Sukhe Sukham Raagnah, Prajaanam Cha Hite Hitam.” That is, the happiness of the ruler lies in the happiness of the subjects and his welfare lies in the welfare of the subjects. Similarly, Rajdharma was declared supreme and it was said that Rajdharma protects all other religions. This ancient Indian wisdom is reflected in this budget in the form of ‘duty’.

He described education as the second pillar. He said that educated India is the engine of development. A provision of about Rs 1,40,000 crore has been made for education in the budget, which is 8 percent more than last year. Rs 22,000 crore has been allocated for holistic education, Rs 7,500 crore for PM-Shri Yojana and Rs 7,150 crore for Eklavya Model Residential Schools.

Five new university townships will be established, which will increase coordination between industry and academia. It is proposed to set up 15,000 content labs in schools, so that India becomes a leader in digital and audience economy.

The third pillar is women empowerment. Sujit Kumar said that when you empower a woman, you empower a civilization. In the budget, emphasis has been laid on special schemes and entrepreneurship promotion for women. Sports and youth power were also mentioned as important pillars.

He said that a huge amount of money has been provisioned for sports this year, which is almost four times more than in 2013-14. About Rs 1,000 crore has been allocated for the ‘Khelo India’ mission. India is bidding to host the 2036 Olympics and is preparing for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. These investments are aimed at placing India among the top 10 sporting nations by 2036.
