New Delhi: The T20 World Cup 2026 Group D match between South Africa and Afghanistan proved nothing less than a spectacle on Wednesday morning. After being tied with the scores level, the match went into the first Super Over which again ended in a tie leading to the game going into the second Super Over. Something of this sort was never-ever witnessed in the history of the T20 WC but it has been witnessed in T20Is on a few occasions.

Finally, the South African side prevailed in the twin Super Over drama to beat a spirited Afghanistan team and win the contest. Both the sides, which are known as chokers in the history of world cricket, tried their level best in putting up a spirited fight in the nail-biter but at the end, the Afghans slipped and the Proteas took advantage of the situation.

The fierce battle between the Group D participants not only kept the spectators on their toes but also managed to shatter online records for maximum viewership during a morning T20 World Cup game in this edition.

Meanwhile, South Africa have played a total of two matches this season and emerged victorious in both of them. By virtue of the thrilling victory, the Proteas have taken a step close to the Super 8 stage while the scenario for Afghanistan becomes exactly opposite. The side has lost both their fixtures and their entry into the Super 8 stage looks a bit grim now.
