Labour's attack on 'His Majesty' further proof Starmer doesn't value Britain

Labour's decision to scrap 'His Majesty' from Government branding is further evidence Sir Keir Starmer doesn't value Britain's history or values it has been claimed. Writing for the Daily Express, Alex Burghart MP, the Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said the Prime Minister's "republican tendencies continue to disgrace us all".

He vowed the Conservatives would reverse the decision "on day one" should they win the next election. Mr Burghart wrote: "The Government's decision to remove 'His Majesty' from public-facing communications is not just an edgy rebrand; it is further evidence that Labour does not value our great nation's history, culture, or values."

He added: "Representing the Crown is a great honour and should be treated as such. The Prime Minister's republican tendencies, however, continue to disgrace us all." Mr Burghart said Sir Keir's past support for abolishing the monarchy meant the rebrand should come as no surprise to Express readers.

"We all know that Keir Starmer boasted about supporting the abolition of the Monarchy, so this 'strategic' decision should come as no surprise to us," he wrote. But he warned: "The lengths his Government has gone to diminish our place on the world stage and kowtow to hostile states is disgraceful."

The Shadow minister pointed to a pattern of behaviour which he claimed showed Labour's lack of respect for British institutions and interests. He cited the Government's decision to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, home to a vital British and American military base, to Mauritius, a known ally of China, while paying £35billion for the privilege.

Mr Burghart also highlighted Sir Keir's decision to grant planning permission for "a mega Chinese spy hub in the centre of London" despite "numerous occasions of the CCP overseeing and instigating covert operations in Britain." The rebrand is believed to be the legacy of Tim Allan, Sir Keir's recently resigned Director of Communications.

A spokesman for the campaign organisation Republic, which calls for the abolition of the Monarchy, disagreed with calls to restore the branding. They said: "People need to get some perspective. The government is the government of the UK, it is the UK's government.

They added: "The logo is accurate and wholly unimportant. It has also been in use for a long time, alongside other logos. Given the collapsing support for the monarchy perhaps this is as good a time as any to drop the pretence that our government belongs to the King."

But the Shadow minister concluded with a pledge to restore the traditional branding, which correctly refers to the Government as 'HM Government'. "That is why, when the Conservatives return to Government, we will reverse this decision and return to the rightful and traditional HM branding on day one," he wrote.

The rebrand was exposed on Monday after Ministers admitted in response to a Written Parliamentary Question that "a strategic decision has been made to adopt 'UK Government'" as the primary identity for all public-facing communications. Under the previous Conservative Government, official guidance stated the default logo was "HM Government" and described it as "recognised and trusted by the public."

The Labour Party was approached for comment.
