India is preparing for Bharat Bandh across the country on Thursday, February 12, 2026. It has been called by a joint platform of 10 central trade unions (including CITU, AITUC, INTUC, HMS, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC) and is supported by farmer organizations like Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM). The organizer claims that more than 30 crore workers can participate in it to protest against the policy of the Centre.

**Key demands** include repeal of four new labor codes (notified in late 2025, to replace 29 laws that are accused of undermining job security, bargaining rights and social protection), opposing the India-US interim trade deal (which fears cheap imports will hurt farming, dairy and farmers), VB-G RAM G Act 2025 (replacing MGNREGA), SHANTI Act (Conversion to Nuclear Energy), repealing laws like Draft Seed Bill, Electricity Amendment Bill, restoring the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), ₹9,000 minimum pension and stopping privatization.

**Effect: What is open and what is closed?**
– **Banks and Finance**: Public sector banks (eg, SBI, Bank of Baroda, PNB) are facing problems due to union involvement (AIBEA, BEFI, etc.). Branches may open but check clearance, deposits/withdrawals and counter service may be delayed. Probably it will be normal in private banks. Online banking, UPI and ATM will work. There is no official holiday of RBI.

– **Schools and Colleges**: No holiday has been declared across the country. Most institutions will remain open, but may be closed or have reduced attendance in strongly unionized states like Kerala, Odisha, West Bengal, Karnataka and Assam. Parents/students should inquire at the local level.

– **Transport and Market**: There can be big problems. Government buses, auto-rickshaws and trucks may stop with “chakka jam” (road blockade) in protest areas. Railways and airports are running normally, but due to local transport problems, access may be difficult. Wholesale/local markets and shops may remain closed in affected areas (e.g., almost complete closure in Kerala, Odisha).

– **Essential Services**: Hospital, pharmacy, milk supply, ambulance, fire service and emergency operations have been exempted and are expected to function normally.

**State-wise Outlook**: Severe in Kerala and Odisha (complete shutdown expected); Some/more participation in West Bengal, Karnataka, Assam, Andhra Pradesh; Less, but occasional protests in Delhi/NCR and metro. The impact varies depending on the strength and location of the local union.

Commuters and residents should plan in advance, use private vehicles if possible, and keep an eye on local updates. The purpose of the bandh is to put pressure on the government, but it will not bring life to a complete halt—essential work will continue.
