Whether it is a romantic dinner, a spontaneous evening out, or a casual gathering with friends, there is often a shared desire for skin that appears calm, well-rested and naturally radiant.

Dermatologists say that achieving that fresh look does not require drastic measures in the days leading up to February 14. In a recent conversation with Hindustan Times, Dr. Khushboo Jha, Chief Dermatologist at Metro Hospital and Founder of One Skin Clinic, explained that simple, consistent care can make a visible difference without risking irritation or breakouts.
According to Dr. Jha, the days before a special event should be about maintaining balance rather than chasing dramatic results. She advises concentrating on hydration, mild exfoliation and safe brightening methods while avoiding any aggressive or unfamiliar treatments.
She noted that gentle exfoliation can help remove accumulated dead skin cells, allowing fresher skin to surface. This process, when done carefully, improves texture and enhances clarity without causing redness or sensitivity. The goal, she explained, is to support the skin’s natural renewal process rather than shock it with intense procedures.
Beyond skincare products, rest plays a crucial role in how the face appears. Dr. Jha highlighted that under-eye darkness and puffiness are often linked to fatigue more than to gaps in skincare routines. Even one or two nights of quality sleep can significantly improve how refreshed the skin looks.
Adequate rest helps the body repair itself, which in turn reflects on the skin. A well-rested face typically appears brighter and less swollen, particularly around the eyes.
Experts strongly caution against trying new treatments just days before an important event. Procedures such as chemical peels, unfamiliar facials or new skincare products can trigger unexpected reactions, including breakouts or irritation.
Dr. Jha emphasised that experimenting with the skin at the last minute can undo weeks of careful maintenance. Sticking to familiar products and routines reduces the risk of adverse reactions and keeps the skin stable.
What you consume in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day can also influence how your skin looks. Reducing sugar and processed foods while focusing on balanced, nutrient-rich meals may support clearer skin. Antioxidant-rich foods such as berries, nuts, seeds and fresh vegetables can aid in maintaining skin vitality.
Hydration remains equally important. Drinking eight to ten glasses of water daily helps maintain skin suppleness and supports overall skin health.
Dr. Jha also shared a few practical measures that can help enhance the skin’s appearance before the occasion:
Gentle exfoliation using mild chemical exfoliants such as lactic acid or mandelic acid can smooth texture without causing irritation. Harsh scrubs should be avoided, as they may lead to redness.
For under-eye care, products containing caffeine, peptides or hyaluronic acid may reduce puffiness and improve hydration. Keeping eye creams slightly chilled can enhance their soothing effect, especially after long hours of screen time.
Lip care should not be overlooked. Light exfoliation to remove dry flakes, followed by a nourishing lip balm, ensures smoother lipstick application and a more even finish.
A simple ice massage, using ice wrapped in a clean cloth, can temporarily reduce puffiness and stimulate circulation, giving the skin a quick refreshed appearance.
Finally, makeup preparation can influence the final look. Applying a hydrating primer or illuminating moisturiser before foundation can create a smoother base and enhance natural glow without making the skin appear oily.
