Met Office urges Brits in 59 areas to prepare nine essential items over 42 hours

The Met Office says Brits need nine key items in their cars as a raft of new weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued.

The first Met Office warning for snow and icem covering a wide area of the UK from Stoke-on-Trent to the north of Scotland, warns residents that heavy snow may cause disruption to travel during Saturday night and Sunday morning.

This first warning runs from 9pm on Saturday until 10am Sunday, as 3cm of snow could settle at low elevations and up to 15cm on higher ground. While a second snow and ice warning covers northern Scotland as well as parts of north-eastern England.

This second warning comes into force at 4pm today, running until 10am on Saturday. Between them, the two warnings cover 59 areas and run for a 42 hour period.

The second warning says Brits are likely to face difficult travel conditions in places. Showers of snow and hail are set to sweep in on Friday afternoon with accumulations of 1cm to 3cm in places overnight.

Both warnings tell drivers to keep a set of emergency items in their vehicles in case they break down or become trapped in adverse weather conditions. "Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous,” the Met Office warnings said. “Keep yourself and others safe by planning your route, giving yourself extra time for your journey. Check for road closures or delays to public transport and amend plans if necessary."
