The BBC has faced fierce criticism for its "abysmal" Winter Olympics coverage, with viewers united in their complaints as they expressed their disappointment on social media.

The broadcaster has been presenting coverage of 'major events' from the Milan-Cortina Games on BBC One and BBC Two daily since competition commenced last weekend, with 'additional' events available through BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website. With TNT Sports broadcasting the Olympics for the first time and delivering over 850 hours of content, the BBC has also reduced its live coverage compared to previous years.

BBC coverage has been fronted by seasoned presenters Clare Balding, Hazel Irvine and Jeanette Kwakye, with British Winter Olympic legends Lizzy Yarnold, Chemmy Alcott and Robin Cousins also forming part of the expert panel.

Nevertheless, despite some recognisable personalities leading the coverage, viewers have expressed dissatisfaction with the broadcaster's output this year, with one labelling their coverage as "their worst [at an Olympics] by an absolute mile", reports Wales Online.

With Olympic enthusiasts flocking to social media to voice their grievances, most highlighted the broadcaster's tendency to jump between events, arguing that some competitions cannot be watched from beginning to end on its channels. In a similar vein, others have criticised the number of repeats and VTs shown on the BBC, with many calling for more focus on live events and those featuring British athletes.

"The BBC coverage of the Winter Olympics is actually abysmal," penned one disgruntled viewer on X.

"How many repeats do i have to sit through? Why aren't you airing things that Team GB are actually in?".

Another responded: "It's the worst Olympic coverage I've seen them do by an absolute mile."

"BBC, your coverage of the Winter Olympics is so poor," a third wrote. "Instead of showing the curling on TV or iPlayer, you're (sic) showing something we're not even involved in followed by some rubbish VTs."

"The BBC coverage of the Winter Olympics is such trash," said another. "I just wanna watch the snowboarding and it's like 'we're gonna join it halfway through then switch to it on another channel, actually, no it's not on the other channel after all, you're outta luck'."

One viewer described the broadcaster's ice hockey coverage as "absolutely and utterly atrocious," adding: "Watching the men's game on the iPlayer and with no warning you change to the skiing."

Ahead of the Games, BBC Sport director Alex Kay-Jelski assured viewers that the broadcaster would bring them "all the very best action and medal moments" and promised "unmissable coverage" for its audience."

The Winter Olympics spotlight the world's most elite winter athletes as they push the boundaries of speed, precision and excellence across snow and ice, and BBC Sport can't wait to bring audiences all the very best action and medal moments straight from MilanCortina," he said.

"Our expert lineup of international winter sport stars, combined with our unmissable coverage, will ensure that the Italy 2026 Olympic Winter Games take pride of place in what promises to be an unforgettable year of sport."
