BBC issue Winter Olympics apology for 'terrible' coverage of historic Team GB moment

BBC commentator John Hunt expressed his frustration at the broadcaster's camera work after viewers missed the crucial start of Matt Weston's goldmedal-winning mixed team skeleton run. The Team GB athlete, competing alongside Tabitha Stoecker, defeated two German teams to secure Britain's second gold medal of the day - but those tuning in to witness history were left frustrated.

As Weston prepared to launch down the slope, the camera inexplicably moved away from him. It instead focused on the Team GB official behind him giving the signal.

The shot shifted upwards from Weston's position on the floor, offering a close-up of the person signalling him to start. That meant viewers missed the opening of a historic sporting moment.

Hunt was amongst many who criticised the camerawork. He said: "Oh, what are they doing, what are they playing at; that's terrible!"

He subsequently apologised whilst attempting to regain his composure for the remainder of the run, adding: "That's a great start, sorry about the pictures... but Matt's on his way."

Weston, who claimed gold on Friday to secure Team GB's first medal at the Games, became the first British athlete to win two gold medals at a Winter Olympics. Stoeker had initially posted a time of 1:00.77, 0.30 seconds behind the Germans, with the Brits running last in the final.

Weston delivered a breath-taking 58.59-second run to secure his second victory of the Games. That capped off a Super Sunday that saw Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale bag gold in the snowboard cross mixed team event.

Regrettably, fans were unable to relive the entirety of his triumphant run as the BBC's live camera inexplicably cut away from the athlete at a crucial moment. The 28-year-old was over the moon with his win, telling the broadcaster: "Luckily, I felt like I kind of knew what I needed to do.

"Yesterday - not yesterday, the day before, it's all a bit of a whirlwind, when I had the individual event, I kind of took a load of confidence from that, and I just had to, almost in my head, be boring and get the job done. We've done it again!"

Stoecker, fighting back tears during their joint interview, said: "Thanks [Matt]. I can't believe it. It's a team effort, and when Matt came down, and we were in the green, I was just in shock."

This result propelled Great Britain to 12th place in the medal tally, with all three medals being golden victories within a span of three days.
