United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has described India as a very important and growing power on the global stage. He said that India’s permanent contribution to the international community and the agenda of the United Nations is extremely important for us. Guterres also underlined that the growing and strengthening role of developing economies like India at the global level is emerging as a positive mega trend.

Guterres praised India’s role in peace, security, sustainable development and human rights in a special interview given to the media before leaving for New Delhi to participate in the India AI Impact Summit. He especially remembered India’s G-20 presidency, contribution to peacekeeping and stability in times of crisis of democracy. His statement has come at a time when his tenure is ending this year.

India is considered an important power

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made these comments before leaving for New Delhi to participate in the India AI Impact Summit, the first summit on artificial intelligence to be held in the Global South. Guterres said in a special interview given to the media here that India has become a very important power in discussions on all aspects of United Nations activities such as peace and security, sustainable development. I remember the chairmanship of G20 hosted by India where very important decisions were taken.

Expressed gratitude to India

Guterres said, “And as a democratic country, it has also become an important force in terms of human rights, and that too in a world where unfortunately we see democracy in crisis in many parts of the world.” In response to a question to India’s role in the United Nations, he said that first of all we are very grateful to India for its presence in United Nations peacekeeping. Currently around 5000 Indian women and men are deployed in peacekeeping operations across the world.

Talked on these issues also

He also highlighted India’s first all-women police contingent in peacekeeping and termed it remarkable. Guterres’ tenure as UN chief ends this year. He highlighted some positive mega trends emerging in the world amid increasing conflicts and increasing inequalities.

He said that my message is that there are many reasons to worry. We have seen that conflicts are increasing, injustice and inequalities are increasing and the problem of poverty and hunger in the world is not being solved. He said that we have seen terrorism growing and turning into a horrifying form in different parts of the world. So there are many reasons for concern, but there are also some positive mega trends.

Guterres stressed that one of the most important mega trends relates to the role of countries and economies like India. The UN chief said that the share of the G7 and other similar countries in the global economy is decreasing every day, while the emerging economies, of which India is a major pillar, are continuously increasing their share in the world economy.
