A train journey turned traumatic for a young student traveling in Uttar Pradesh, after she accused a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) of molestation and intimidation aboard the Ahmedabad–Gorakhpur Express. The incident has once again cast doubt on claims of safe travel for women on Indian Railways.
According to the complaint, the student—originally from Mau and currently studying in Gorakhpur—had returned from Mau after appearing for an examination. Owing to heavy crowding at the station, she was unable to buy a ticket and boarded the train hoping to seek assistance from railway staff.
During the journey, she came into contact with a TTE identified as Rahul Kumar. After listening to her situation, he allegedly reassured her and said, “Don’t worry, I’ll arrange a seat for you.” Trusting his words, the student followed him. She alleges that instead of helping her, the TTE took her to an AC First Class cabin, locked the door from inside, and began making obscene gestures and sexually harassing her.
The student further claimed that when she resisted, the accused tried to scare her by misusing his authority. He allegedly threatened to file a case against her for traveling without a ticket and warned that she could be sent to jail if she spoke to anyone about the incident.
Despite the fear and pressure, the student acted bravely and immediately dialed the police emergency number 112. Following her complaint, the Government Railway Police in Gorakhpur registered a case and began searching for the accused TTE, who is currently absconding.
