Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly becoming a part of children's education in India, but significant misconceptions about this technology have also emerged. According to the Bharat Survey for EdTech 2025, released on Wednesday, 35% of children using edtech are now learning with GenAI tools. However, nearly three-quarters of those aware of GenAI simply consider it an internet search engine.
This survey was conducted among 12,500 families in 10 states.
This survey was conducted between July 2025 and January 2026 among 12,500 households and 2,500 teachers in 10 states. The report states that GenAI is no longer an experimental technology for children from low-income families. Of these, 96% use it several times a week, and 69% use GenAI tools daily.
More Use, Less Understanding
The report also states that 85% of GenAI-savvy children claimed they understood how it works, but 72% compared it to a regular search application. This blurs the distinction between potential answers generated by AI and accurate information available on the internet.
The Risk of Misinformation
Furthermore, approximately 46% of respondents cited misinformation as a major risk associated with the use of edtech and GenAI. Furthermore, concerns were expressed about excessive use.
Use for Academic Purposes
According to the survey, children are primarily using GenAI for school-related purposes, with 73% using it for doubt-solving and practice, 48% for learning new skills or language translation, and 32% using it for test preparation.
Children like GenAI because 45% like its simple language and 41% find it time-saving to get instant answers, while 40% like its interactive format.
