Tragic Bee Attack Claims Life of Veteran Umpire Manik Gupta in Uttar Pradesh

Manik Gupta, a seasoned cricket umpire, tragically passed away following a bee attack during a match at the Sapru Stadium in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. Renowned in the Kanpur cricket community, he was affiliated with the Kanpur Cricket Association.


Brother Shares Details of the Incident

According to Amit Kumar Gupta, Manik's brother, the incident occurred during a drinks break after Manik had completed his match. He approached another umpire when a sudden swarm of bees descended upon the area. In his attempt to flee, Manik lost his footing and fell, becoming overwhelmed by the bees. Amit recounted, "His match had concluded, and he went to meet a fellow umpire. While they were enjoying tea, a swarm of bees attacked. Manik lost his balance while trying to escape, and the bees swarmed him. He had been umpiring for nearly 30 years and was a state panel umpire."


Fellow Umpire's Perspective

Jagdish Sharma, a fellow umpire, recounted the harrowing experience, stating, "During the drinks break, we were suddenly attacked by bees. We all ran, but Manik bhai, being older, couldn't escape as quickly. While we all fell to the ground, the bees targeted everyone, and Manik suffered severe attacks."


A Life Committed to Cricket

Bhartendu Puri, a neighbor of Manik Gupta, expressed his sorrow over the incident, highlighting Manik's lifelong dedication to cricket and his family. He described Manik as a devoted umpire and a respected member of the Kanpur Cricket Association, stating, "He dedicated his life to umpiring and supporting his family. This incident is truly unfortunate, as he was a distinguished figure in Kanpur's cricket scene."
