Railway Rules: Can you use an electric stove, heater, or kettle on a train? Or is it against the rules? Find out what the railway rules say.

Millions of people travel by train every day in the country. Whether it's a long-distance journey or a trip of a few hours, the railway is a lifeline for the common man. Consequently, many passengers carry appliances like electric stoves, heaters, or kettles with them, but is this acceptable according to the rules?

Using an electric stove, heater, or electric kettle inside a train is against the rules. The railway is very strict about safety, as excess power consumption and exposed heating elements inside the coach can increase the risk of fire. A small mistake can lead to a major accident.

According to railway rules, flammable or heat-producing appliances are also prohibited. This includes devices like electric stoves, rod heaters, and induction cookers. Even if you have a reservation, the power points in the coach can only be used for charging your mobile phone or laptop. Not for cooking.

Many passengers think that if the appliance is small and doesn't consume much power, it will probably work. However, train wiring is designed for a limited load. Excessive load can cause a short circuit, spark, or fire.

If a passenger is caught using such appliances, violating the rules, they can be fined under the Railway Act. In serious situations, legal action can also be taken. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has the authority to stop them in such cases.

The Railways provides vendors and pantry cars for food and drink needs during the journey. Many trains also offer e-catering services, allowing you to order food at your seat. Carrying dry food, ready-to-eat packets, or pre-made tea in a thermos is a safe option.

Hundreds of people travel together on trains. Negligence by one passenger can pose a danger to others. In such cases, action can be taken under Section 153 of the Railway Act. If a fire breaks out, then under Section 154, there can be a fine and imprisonment up to 2 years.
