A baby monkey named Punch has captured the hearts of the internet. A video showing him being bullied by other monkeys at Ichikawa Zoo went viral.

Punch was born in July 2025. He was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth. Since then, zoo staff have cared for him. Despite their efforts to gradually introduce him to his troop, Punch has struggled to fit in.

In the viral clip, Punch can be seen seeking comfort from a stuffed orangutan. This happens after he is dragged by a larger monkey. The video sparked widespread sympathy. Netizens flooded social media with memes, heartfelt comments, and messages defending the little macaque.

On February 20, Ichikawa Zoo issued a statement about the video. They clarified that the adult monkey scolding and dragging Punch was likely the mother of another baby monkey. Punch had tried to interact with that baby. The zoo explained, “Punch’s attempt at socialising failed, and he then sat down, apparently giving up on communication.” They added, “While Punch is scolded, he shows resilience and mental strength. We encourage support for Punch’s efforts rather than sympathy alone.”

The internet, however, has been unrelenting in its admiration. One user on X said, “My heart literally broke watching this. Punch deserves all the love and a forever safe troop. Protect this baby at all costs.” Another wrote, “Booking a flight to Japan rn.” Some joked about dedicating their lives to safeguarding him.

Punch’s story shows the challenges of being a young monkey without a mother. It also highlights his remarkable resilience. The tiny macaque, turning to his plush toy for comfort, has become a symbol of bravery and vulnerability. He has won a global audience eager to see him thrive within his troop.
