American in the UK tries a crisp sandwich but makes 1 diabolical mistake

There are few things more British than a crisp sandwich. When you need something quick and tasty to fill a gap, nothing beats that incredible combination of bread and your favourite flavour of crisps - plus any other extras you want to throw in there.

It sounds like it shouldn't work, and it might not be the most nutritious thing you can eat, but when it tastes that good, who cares? And that's before even mentioning the oh-so-satisfying crunch as you bite down.

One American tried the classic snack for the first time - but Brits were appalled by one thing she did. The woman, who regularly shares content on social media as carfoodreview_uk, shared the video to TikTok, where she has more than 26,000 followers.

  • 'Selfish neighbour keeps driving on street's communal garden so I'm plotting revenge'
  • Mum 'disgusted' after being refused toilet access at shopping centre

Sitting in her car holding a pack of Walkers Cheese and Onion crisps and two slices of bread, she says: "I truly don't know if this is a prank or not, but I am willing to try anything that you suggest. I hate to say it, I really do, but I feel like I'm being punked."

Holding up a tub of Flora margarine, she adds: "I was told to use butter but all I have is Flora in the house, so hopefully that's ok." And here's the controversial bit - the woman reveals the two slices of bread have been toasted, showing the Flora melting into them.

Opening the bag of crisps and pouring a generous amount onto one of the slices, she continues: "Again, I don't - do you guys actually eat this? Not in like a mean way, but I just feel like it's very simple, it's unique, I don't even know how to go about this. Is that enough? Who knows?"

Asking "do I smash it?" she squashes the sandwich down and tucks in. "I feel like it needed more chips - crisps - so let's try again," she says.

Wrapping up she says: "I'm a firm believer in don't knock it until you try it because this is really good." Holding up the bag of Walkers, she adds: "I love these crisps specifically, and I love bread, and butter, so I feel like you couldn't have gone wrong."

"If I was rating this for lunch I would have given this a one out of 10 because this won't fill me up at all. As a snack? Sure."

People in the comments were quick to point out the grievous error the woman had made. One said: "Noo you were meant to use bread not toast." Replying, the woman said: "Whenever I hear bread I immediately think go toast it so that’s my bad!!"

Another wrote: "I was so excited then saw the toast." The woman replied: "Nooo I didn’t realise it wasn’t supposed to be toasted."

Someone else said: "Not to be that guy but white bread - not toasted. Any spread is good. I think we use butter as a general term. Flora, Clover any of the I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter etc all work." They added: "Another part of the crisp butty etiquette is the crush. Place your hand on the sandwich and crush it until you see your hand print in the bread."

A different user explained their own method. They said: "OK, deffo not supposed to use toast, and to be truly authentic, you need medium sliced white bread and a spread more like Lurpak spreadable and it needs to be reasonably well covered (heavy as it is the cement holding in the crisps), then empty the whole bag into the sandwich and press down hard, you will be shocked how much better your crisp sandwich is."
