A mechanical issues with a Delta flight shortly after take off sparked a fire at a major US airport, before the aircraft was forced to return. The Boeing 737 which was headed to Atlanta safely returned to Savannah after the fire was sparked by a failed engine during takeoff

According to the officials, emergency personnel responded to a grass fire following the flight's landing around 7pm (EST). A statement issued by Delta read: "Delta flight 1067 from Savannah to Atlanta returned to the airport soon after takeoff Sunday evening, following a mechanical issue with the aircraft's left engine. The Boeing 737-900 landed safely and was met by fire trucks, and customers deplaned normally at the gate. The safety of our customers and crew is our highest priority. We are working to reaccommodate all customers on alternate flights. We apologize to our customers for this delay in their travels."

Reports suggested that the fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes. Passengers were able to deplane roughly an hour after landing. Some flights were diverted, while others experienced delays.

The Federal Aviation Administration is now investigating the incident.
