Gangtok, Feb 23: The Indian Army successfully executed a rapid rescue mission named 'Operation Himrahat' in the high-altitude regions of East Sikkim, managing to evacuate 46 tourists who were stranded due to heavy snowfall and severe weather conditions, as reported by officials on Monday.
Defense officials indicated that an unexpected and heavy snowfall, coupled with freezing temperatures on February 22, disrupted normal travel in several vulnerable areas of East Sikkim, leaving numerous tourist vehicles immobilized and civilians exposed to harsh weather.
In response, troops from the Indian Army stationed in the area initiated a well-coordinated relief and rescue operation to assist those impacted.
An official statement revealed that the evacuated tourists were taken to the nearest Army camp, where they received immediate medical evaluations and necessary care.
The Army provided warm shelter, hot meals, heating facilities, and essential relief supplies to alleviate the effects of the extreme cold and altitude-related stress.
Medical teams closely monitored the health of all rescued individuals, confirming their stability before facilitating their onward journey.
In addition to rescuing stranded civilians, the Army also aided in the safe and organized movement of over 150 tourist vehicles from affected routes to secure locations.
Troops managed traffic flow in challenging terrains, preventing panic and further exposure to the severe weather.
Defense officials noted that this timely intervention restored mobility in the region and prevented the situation from worsening amid adverse weather conditions.
Despite the challenges posed by high-altitude conditions and freezing temperatures, Army personnel remained fully prepared and responsive throughout the operation.
This rescue mission exemplifies the Indian Army’s ongoing commitment to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR), especially in remote areas susceptible to natural disruptions.
Through continuous readiness and rapid mobilization, the Army plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of civilians and tourists during emergencies.
The successful execution of 'Operation Himrahat' further emphasizes the Army’s reliability as a first responder during natural disasters in the region.
