Chilli Gardening Tips: Growing green chillies in their garden or kitchen garden is a favorite activity of many people. It not only enhances the taste of food but it is also enjoyable to look at the plants. However, sometimes despite good care, green chilli plants do not bear fruit or bear very little fruit. This problem is frustrating and becomes a matter of concern for people. In this article we will discuss the main reasons and solutions for green chilli plants not bearing fruits so that you can make your crop successful.

Lack of adequate sunlight

Green chilli plants require at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight to bear fruit. If the plant is in shade or receives very little sunlight during the day, the plant may grow but flowers and fruits will be less. Therefore, plant your chilli plants in a place where it gets good amount of sunlight. With this, your plant will grow faster and it will also bear fruits.

For green chilli plants to bear fruit, it is necessary to have sufficient nutrients in the soil. Especially deficiency of phosphorus and potassium causes difficulty in flowering and fruit setting. Due to excess of nitrogen, plants become green and leafy but bear less fruits. Therefore, give a balanced fertilizer which contains the right amount of phosphorus and potassium along with nitrogen.

Balanced irrigation is necessary for green chillies to bear fruit. Too much watering can cause the roots to rot and the plant becomes weak, while too little watering can affect the growth of the plant. Keep checking the soil moisture and water only when the soil feels dry on top. Especially at the time of flowering, excessive irrigation should be avoided as it may cause flowers to fall and less fruits to be produced.

Many insects can attack green chilli plants and damage the flowers and leaves. These insects spoil the flowers and hinder the production of fruits. Additionally, diseases like mildew or blight can also affect the plant. Therefore, inspect the plants regularly and spray organic pesticides or home remedies like neem oil and mustard cake.

Wrong variety selection

Sometimes the reason for plants not bearing fruit is lack of proper breeding or selection of wrong variety. Some chilli varieties are late in setting fruits or require special climate for their cultivation. Therefore, select the variety suitable for your area and pay attention to the quality of the plants so that you can get good and high yields from your chilli plant.
