Diabetes Prevention Tips: Diabetes is a global disease, which is increasing rapidly. Scientists have been researching this disease for a long time. However, no sure cure for this disease has been found till now. But keeping some things in mind helps in controlling it. Recently a study has been conducted in which it has been found that people living in the mountains have less risk of diabetes. Let us know about the research.
This new study has been done by scientists of Gladstone Institute. The head of the research team is Isha Jain, who is a professor at the University of California, San Francisco. He has told about this research. She says that for many years her team was working on the effect of hypoxia i.e. low oxygen in the blood.
Research has found that people living in the mountains get low levels of oxygen. Because of this, the red blood cells of their body absorb more glucose, which reduces the blood sugar level. Not only this, working on this theory the team has also tested it on rats. Scientists have found that mountain people are less likely to suffer from diabetes as compared to people living near sea coasts. He tested this observation, which has also been proved.
Let us tell you that red blood cells in our body are considered to transfer only oxygen. But in this recently published study it has been found that these cells play a big role in controlling blood sugar. Due to less oxygen, red blood cells absorb glucose from the blood like a sponge. Therefore, the body has to adjust to the lighter air. It also reduces the blood sugar level in the body.
When our body gets less oxygen, red blood cells make a special molecule with the help of glucose, which helps in releasing oxygen to the tissue. If we understand this in simple language, then the body prepares itself to survive as per its own requirement. Scientists say that this is not just a game of oxygen but is also to the metabolism of our body. This is why blood sugar can be controlled by living at altitude.
