More than 2,700 tourists stranded due to heavy snowfall near Tsomgo Lake in East Sikkim have been successfully rescued, as reported by officials on Wednesday morning. The severe snowfall in the Sherathang area and surrounding highlands led to blocked roads, trapping 541 vehicles between the 15th Mile and Tsomgo Lake. Coordinated efforts ensured that all vehicles carrying the tourists were safely and systematically evacuated, with the operation concluding on Tuesday night.
According to officials, the snowfall was so intense that the connection between the 15th Mile and Tsomgo Lake was completely severed. The statistics from this crisis are as follows:
Stranded Vehicles: A total of 541 tourist vehicles were caught in the snow.
Rescued Individuals: In total, 2,736 tourists were safely brought out.
Challenging Operation: The rescue mission continued until Tuesday night, navigating sub-zero temperatures and low visibility to ensure all vehicles reached safe locations.
In light of this incident, the Sikkim Tourism Department has issued strict guidelines for tourists and tour operators to prevent similar situations in the future:
Weather Alerts: It is essential to check weather department alerts before commencing travel.
Use of Snow Chains: The use of snow chains on tires is mandatory when traveling in snowy areas to prevent vehicles from slipping.
