Jane Austen's beloved classic Pride and Prejudice returns in an adaptation that Netflix promises will be "faithful", but fans are already having doubts.

The upcoming series, which has been written by Dolly Alderton, boasts a star-studded cast including Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet, Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy and Olivia Colman as Mrs Bennet.

The Jane Austen masterpiece has been adapted plenty of times for the screen, but the Netflix series has been described as being "progressive" in its outlook, which has left fans intrigued.

However, after the trailer was released on February 24, viewers took to YouTube to express their thoughts on why yet another adaptation was needed.

@Draven_X_23 quipped: "Oh good. I was worried we would not get the 50th adaptation of this story." While @sahibakaur3037 shared: "I still don't understand the point of making this."

@ilovepizza4ev3r added: "I have but one question: WHYYYYYYYY???" Plenty of fans are already casting doubts over the series, following backlash to Netflix's version of Austen's Persuasion, which was released in 2022.

@danishson97 commented: "Netflix, I will come for you if you mess this up like you did with Persuasion." @melissawyatt5803 added: "After the hash Netflix made of Persuasion, I don't have a lot of hope for this."

@amritasarkar7893 pleaded: "Netflix, I earnestly request you, if you have a shred of respect for Jane Austen and her generations of fans who've already had splendid adaptations of almost all her novels (with the exception of Mansfield Park perhaps) to please not crucify the most beloved of them all like you did with Persuasion. Please, please, please, don't prove I'm right."

However, there were plenty of fans who expressed their excitement for Netflix's offering, with @coachave87x sharing: "I'm actually really excited for this. I think Jack Lowden is going to give a stellar performance as Darcy. Excited to see his take on the character."

@rociogrimaldo7870 added: "Yes! Netflix please do more faithful adaptations! There is a big market for them!"

@Anyela_1 voiced: "Finally another adaptation, I could watch 50 and not get tired!" @hashtagpie concluded: "I adore the OG Pride and Prejudice novel by Jane Austen and I welcome every new adaptation of her work that springs forth into the world so I will spring forth into my seat and be sat for this Netflix TV series adaptation of Pride and Prejudice as well."

The trailer shows Elizabeth sitting on a roof as she hears the sound of a horse galloping towards her. Viewers witness flashes of her encounters with Mr Darcy, before he appears on horseback, offering a smouldering stare.

The 30-second clip did not give much away, but it still built plenty of suspense, with @gijane0014 commenting: "Props to editor actually building mood and anticipation in this trailer."

Slow Horses star Lowden was one of the first to be cast in the series, and fans are completely divided over whether he will be the right fit for the role.

@Draculow7 shared: "The Darcy is not Darcying," while @Craspcrisper joked: "Temu Mr Darcy". An exact release date for the adaptation is yet to be unveiled.
