Chandra Grahan 2026: Rahu or Ketu… which is the lunar eclipse related to? know the story

Chandra Grahan 2026: This year, a lunar eclipse is going to occur on March 03, the full moon day of the month of Phalgun. The festival of Holika Dahan will be celebrated on this day. This lunar eclipse is going to occur in Leo and Purva Phalguni constellation. This will be the longest lunar eclipse of this year. Its duration will be 03 hours 27 minutes. This eclipse will be visible in India also. In such a situation, the Sutak period of lunar eclipse will also be valid in the country.

According to science, lunar eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon, but in religious texts the time of lunar eclipse is considered inauspicious. During this period, worship, food etc. are prohibited. In such a situation, the question arises whether the lunar eclipse is related to Rahu or Ketu? Let us know in detail the mythological story related to lunar eclipse.

according to legend…

While solar eclipse is seen to be linked to Rahu, Ketu is mostly linked to lunar eclipse. According to the legend, during the churning of the ocean, the dispute between the gods and demons regarding the drinking of nectar was resolved by Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini. Then very cleverly they started making the gods drink nectar. Because Lord Vishnu knew that if the demons drank the nectar, they would become immortal and the crisis on the entire world would increase.

Rahu and Ketu are one and the same

However, among the demons there was a very clever demon named Swarbhanu. He understood the trick of Lord Vishnu. Then, to get the nectar, he assumed the form of a god and silently sat in the row of gods and drank the nectar. Lord Vishnu could not know this, but the Sun and the Moon caught his trick and told this to Lord Vishnu. After this, in anger, God cut the throat of demon Swarbhanu with Sudarshan Chakra, but he had already drank the nectar and hence he did not die.

After this, the head part of Swarabhanu was called Rahu and the torso part was called Ketu. Since then, Rahu and Ketu considered the Sun and the Moon as their enemies. It is believed that on the day of full moon both of them engulf the moon. That's why lunar eclipse occurs.
