A beloved classic novel widely considered a masterpiece is about to be turned into a must-watch TV drama with a huge Netflix star at the centre.

Deadline has confirmed that Sex Education and The White Lotus's Aimee Lou Wood is attached to a new adaptation of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, originally published in 1847.

Wood will be playing the titular heroine, a young woman who suffers an oppressive childhood and education before becoming a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she finds herself enthralled by the enigmatic Mr Rochester.

UK studio Working Title is behind the the project, with award-winning Succession screenwriter Miriam Battye penning the scripts.

Further casting is currently under wraps so far and it's also unknown where the series will be broadcast.

Deadline understands that an unnamed UK broadcaster is in discussions to board the project.

While the series is in preliminary development stages and is unlikely to be released until next year at the earliest, the enduring classic has a considerable contingent of fans who will be eager to see a fresh take on the source material.

One five-star Amazon review from a reader said: "Charlotte Brontë's masterpiece was everything I hoped for and more, a novel rich with depth, passion, and a heroine whose strength still resonates today."

Someone else gushed: "How this book has received reviews of less than 5 stars is alien to me; it is, by far, the best book I have ever read!

"I first read Jane Eyre when I was 11 and have read it many many times since. It's gothic, romantic, heart-rendering, dark, even funny on some occasions (What the deuce!!) and I could not recommend this masterpiece highly enough."

And a final fan wrote: "One of the best books ever written, in my humble opinion.

"You can't go wrong - it's got all the stuff that keeps you gripped: Love, insanity, death, spookiness, lies, deception, happiness; and I'm not really a massive 'classics' fan. Buy it. You won't regret it."

Jane Eyre's most recent major adaptation was the 2011 film starring Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender as Jane and Rochester.

Luther star Ruth Wilson previously portrayed Jane in the 2006 TV adaptation, a four-part drama that also starred Toby Stephens as her love interest.

It's currently unknown how many episodes will feature in the upcoming series, but fans can expect an even more rich exploration of the novel's timeless themes and compelling coming-of-age story.

Jane Eyre does not yet have a release date.
