UK holidaymakers are being told to check their passports now as HM Passport Office releases a fresh alert that could see your travel plans ruined before you even get to the airport. In a recent message on X, formerly Twitter, officials have warned "you may not be able to travel".

The alert goes on: "Damaged passports may cause difficulties when travelling, if you're planning a trip check that yours is in good condition. Signs of damage can include pages missing, rips, stains, or the cover is coming away."

Additional information on the Passport Office website explains that the document is deemed to be damaged if any details are illegible, such as blurred text or faded ink; if any pages are torn, cut, or missing entirely; if there are holes, cuts, or tears in the cover; if the cover is separating from the pages; or if there are marks on the pages, including water damage or ink stains.

If you've examined your passport and realised you need a replacement, the fastest method to get a new one is through the government's online service. A replacement passport will set you back £94.50 and you'll need a digital photograph and a credit or debit card.

Alternatively, you can renew using a paper form, available to collect from your local Post Office, though this option carries a fee of £107. For applicants who may be required to attend an interview as part of the process, HM Passport Office has confirmed that these are now conducted via video call online, and you will be contacted to arrange a booking once your application has been reviewed.
