A man was left screaming "they've cut my hand off" after being attacked by a machete-wielding intruder. Paul Bloomer has revealed the horror injury that almost sliced completley through his brother Kyle's wrist after two men stormed their home. The 53-year-old said he was watching television upstairs in his bedroom with his partner when he heard his younger brother, who had been staying with them, shout out from downstairs.

Paul raced to the living room where he says he was confronted by two men before being struck repeatedly with a huge blade - suffering cuts and bruises to his body and face. He then spotted his 33-year-old sibling screaming in agony, clutching his seriously injured hand, which he said had been almost severed all the way round. Police have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of GBH with intent following the incident, which happened at Paul's home in Blyth, Northumberland, last week.

Paul said: "I work in IT. I get up at 7am, I go to work, I come home and have my tea and I'm in bed by 9.30pm. This isn't my world."

He revealed how he was in his room with his girlfriend Debra Clark when the drama unfolded at just after 8pm on February 16. Kyle, who works as a delivery driver and has been living with Paul, was downstairs in the living room.

"I was sitting upstairs with my girlfriend watching television. We heard the door but didn't think anything of it," Paul explained. "Then I heard my brother scream; 'They have cut my hand off'."

When Paul arrived downstairs he found two men in his house, one of which was armed with a machete, when the alleged attack took place before the intruders fled.

When Paul arrived downstairs he found two men in his house, one of which was armed with a machete, when the alleged attack took place before the intruders fled.

Debra, who witnessed the attack on her partner called for an ambulance and attempted to help Kyle by holding a towel over his injured hand.

"He thought his hand was cut off because the bottom half was hanging off," said Paul. "Debra was trying to hold Kyle's hand on. She had a towel round it."

Paul and Kyle were taken to hospital where Paul received stitches to his face and back before being discharged. Kyle remained in hospital after his brother was released.

"He's got very little feeling in his hand," Paul said. "He is very lucky he hasn't lost it. It did look like they had cut it off. "

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "At about 8.15pm on Monday, February 16, we received a report of a disturbance at and address in the Twentieth Avenue area of Blyth in Northumberland. Emergency services attended where it was found two men had sustained injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article.

"Both men, aged in their 30s and 50s, were taken to hospital for treatment of injuries not believed to be life-threatening. They have since been discharged.

"An investigation was launched and a 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault. He has since been released on police bail. Whilst enquiries are at an early stage, it is believed that those involved were known to one another.

"Enquiries remain ongoing on anyone with information is asked to get in touch."
