Khelo India Winter Games: A Vision for Gulmarg as a Global Sports Hub

On Thursday, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, spoke at the closing ceremony of the second leg of the sixth Khelo India Winter Games held in Gulmarg. He reiterated the government's dedication to establishing the region as a leading global destination for winter sports, as reported by SAI Media.


Gulmarg's Potential as a Winter Sports Hub

During his address at the renowned Golf Course in Gulmarg, Mandaviya highlighted the vast potential of Kashmir, stating, "Gulmarg is set to become the global hub for winter sports in the near future." He emphasized the unifying power of sports, which fosters camaraderie and promotes development. His interactions with athletes and coaches at Khelo India Centres in Jammu & Kashmir revealed a remarkable sporting spirit emerging from the area.


Future Editions to Feature Extended Events

In a significant announcement, the Union Minister revealed plans to extend future Winter Games in Gulmarg into a 15-day festival that will merge sports with tourism and cultural activities. "The Winter Games will no longer be confined to four days. By incorporating tourism, we will host a 15-day Winter Games featuring a Fit India Carnival, cultural events, and various competitions," he stated.


Establishment of a National Centre of Excellence

Mandaviya also announced the creation of a National Centre of Excellence for winter sports in Jammu & Kashmir. He noted the positive changes following the abrogation of Article 370, stating, "There is a renewed belief in J&K. Previously, stone-pelting incidents made headlines; now, it is sports that are in focus. The region is evolving and will play a crucial role in realizing PM Modi's vision of a developed India by 2027."


Promoting Tourism and Sports

To enhance sports, culture, and tourism, Mandaviya stressed the need to fully harness Gulmarg's potential as a "world-class tourism destination." He shared his experiences from traveling to 55 countries, including Switzerland, and expressed awe at the breathtaking beauty of the Pir Panjal slopes. "I fully support a 15-day festival in Gulmarg that will encompass winter sports competitions like skiing and snow mountaineering, along with a FIT India carnival and cultural programs to create a festive atmosphere," he added.


Army's Triumph at the Games

The Union Minister honored the Indian Army team for successfully defending their championship title at the Khelo India Winter Games, where they secured 23 medals, including nine golds, six silvers, and eight bronzes. The runners-up, Himachal Pradesh, earned 14 medals (six golds, seven silvers, and one bronze), while Haryana finished third.


Khelo Bharat Niti: A New Era for Indian Sports

Mandaviya remarked that the Khelo Bharat Niti is revolutionizing Indian sports, stating, "This initiative will meet the aspirations of India's youth. The landscape has changed, and sports should remain free from politics. Our policies prioritize athletes over national federations." He commended the Jammu and Kashmir administration for successfully organizing the Gulmarg leg of the KIWG 2026 and thanked all stakeholders, especially security forces, for ensuring a smooth event.


Overview of KIWG 2026

The first phase of KIWG 2026 took place in Ladakh from January 20-26, featuring over 900 athletes from 25 states and Union Territories competing in six different sports across Gulmarg and Leh.
