New Delhi: As the festival of Holi approaches, an atmosphere of colors and enthusiasm is created all around. This year Holi will be celebrated on 3rd and 4th March. People start planning the pichkari, colors and pictures in advance. Many youngsters are also keen to repeat scenes from film songs. However, this joy of colors can lead to skin problems later.
Rashes, pimples, itching, burning and blemishes become common problems after Holi. Dermatologists say that this problem is not caused only by colors, but depends on how much you prepared your skin beforehand and how you took care of it later. If proper pre-care and post-care is done, the skin can be kept safe. Let us know the important suggestions given by experts.
Avoid chemical peeling, laser, waxing, threading or excessive exfoliation five to seven days before Holi. These processes weaken the top layer of the skin, increasing the risk of irritation and inflammation from colors.
Most people focus only on the face, while the lips, ears and neck are also quickly affected. Apply lip balm with SPF and don’t forget to apply a light moisturizer on these areas as well. Keep nails short and apply clear nail polish so that the color does not seep in.
Many people believe that herbal or organic colors are completely safe, but every skin is different. Therefore, before Holi, it is important to do a patch test by applying some color on the inner part of the hand.
If you have eczema, fungal infections or other skin problems, avoid wet colors. Play with dry complexion and don’t spend too much time in the sun.
Apply coconut, almond or sesame oil on the face, neck, hands and feet 30 to 60 minutes before playing with colors. This creates a layer on the skin and the color does not penetrate deep.
After playing Holi, take bath with lukewarm water. Avoid very hot water and do not rub the skin vigorously. Use a mild sulphate free cleanser. After this apply aloe vera gel so that the skin gets relief.
Apply an unscented moisturizer or cream containing ceramides immediately after showering. If necessary, apply it again at night so that the skin remains moisturized.
If there is slight irritation or redness on the skin, apply aloe vera gel or rose water. A light pack of multani mitti or curd and honey can also provide relief.
If you have problems like persistent itching, blisters or drainage after Holi, contact a doctor immediately. Serious problems can be avoided with timely treatment.
Holi is a festival of happiness. With a little caution and proper care, you can enjoy the colors and also keep your skin safe. This time, play Holi with full heart, but do not ignore the safety of your skin.
