Courtney Walsh, the bowling consultant for Zimbabwe, echoed captain Sikandar Raza's sentiments about the team's desire to deliver "strong performances and earn respect" as they prepare for their Super 8s match against South Africa this Sunday.
Under Raza's leadership, Zimbabwe has had a commendable group-stage performance in the T20 World Cup, achieving victories over Oman by 8 wickets, Australia by 23 runs, and Sri Lanka by 6 wickets, remaining unbeaten to advance to the Super 8s. Although they have yet to secure a win in the Super 8s, they are determined to disrupt South Africa's unbeaten streak ahead of the Proteas' semifinal match.
Key players for Zimbabwe in this tournament have been Brian Bennett, who has amassed 277 runs across five matches, making him the second-highest run-scorer, and Blessing Muzarabani, who has taken 12 wickets at an impressive average of 12, placing him second on the wicket-takers list.
Following their initial Super 8s defeat to the West Indies, Raza reiterated the team's commitment to winning every match and earning respect, stating, "Despite the bruises from today, every time Zimbabwe walks out, we aim to win. We want to put in strong performances and earn respect."
In a pre-match press conference, Walsh supported Raza's remarks, emphasizing that Zimbabwe has gained respect through their World Cup performances and hopes to maintain that momentum. He stated, "I think what he has said is correct in terms of he wanted other countries to look at Zimbabwe with respect. And I think we have achieved that in terms of our performances in this World Cup. And long may that continue."
Walsh commended Zimbabwe's consistent play, noting that their quality cricket and success in reaching the Super 8s is a source of pride. He remarked, "The type of cricket that we have played would have proven that. The guys were very consistent in Sri Lanka and played some very good cricket. We wanted to make a statement here and I think the performance showed itself, and we're just happy with the way they played and a great success to be here and be part of the Super 8."
The upcoming match between Zimbabwe and South Africa is scheduled to take place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
