On Tuesday, a suspected drone strike attributed to Iran targeted the CIA facility located within the US Embassy in Riyadh, as reported by sources familiar with the situation. Both the United States and Saudi Arabia confirmed that two drones impacted the embassy grounds, although they did not specify that the CIA station was involved. An internal alert from the US Department of State, which was reviewed by a major news outlet, indicated that the attack caused part of the embassy roof to collapse and resulted in smoke contamination in certain areas. The alert noted that the compound experienced structural damage and that personnel were instructed to remain sheltered in place. The full extent of the damage remains unclear, but there have been no reports of injuries among CIA staff. While this incident poses challenges for the agency's operations in the region, former CIA officials suggest that such disruptions are manageable. One former officer, who requested anonymity, stated, "Drawdowns are part of the business," and expressed confidence that the strong local liaison relationships would ensure support for personnel. He added, "There's a lot of redundancy built into these operations." Iran has historically regarded the CIA as an adversarial entity, referencing the US's covert involvement in the 1953 coup that ousted Iran's democratically elected prime minister.
