Daily worship holds special significance in Hinduism. We offer flowers, water, and naivedya to deities with complete devotion. The question often arises: can certain puja materials be reused? Or do they become 'nirmalya' (stale) once offered?

The scriptures prescribe different rules for each puja material. Let's learn about the puja materials that can be reused and those that should not.

These materials can be reused:

It is generally believed that puja items should not be reused, but some special materials are exceptions.

Ganga water: Ganga water never becomes stale. You can use it repeatedly in the Kalash or for puja.

Tulsi leaves: Tulsi leaves, dear to Lord Vishnu, can be washed with clean water and offered again after offering them once. According to the scriptures, Tulsi leaves do not become stale for 10 days.

Belpatra (Bael leaves) offered to Lord Shiva: If the Belpatra (Bael leaves) offered to Lord Shiva are clean and untorn, they can be washed and re-offered to the Shivalinga.

Gold, Silver, or Copper Utensils: Metal vessels used in worship can be washed and reused.

Reuse of these items is prohibited.
Some items are considered inauspicious to reuse after offering them once.

Pushpa (Flowers): Once a flower has been offered to God, it should not be re-offered. After drying, it becomes Nirmalya.

Akshat (Rice): If rice grains have been offered to God during worship, they should not be reused.

Naivedya (Bhog): Once offered, it should be distributed as Prasad. The same food should not be offered to God again.

Lamp Wick: A cotton wick that has been burned once should not be reused. Use a new wick every time.

Why are these rules important?

According to religious beliefs, purity and freshness are of paramount importance in worship. Offering stale or discarded materials is considered disrespectful. However, sacred items like Belpatra and Tulsi are permitted for reuse due to their special divine power.
